Reputation Check: What’s the Internet Saying About You? 🛑
Hey Nerds! 🎉 Welcome back to The Ad Nerd—where marketing feels less like rocket science and more like your cool friend spilling the secrets.
Let’s dive into this week’s treasure chest of marketing wisdom
In The News 🗞️
Trump’s Tariffs = Trouble for Small Biz
President Trump’s proposed “Liberation Day” tariffs could stack up to a trillion-dollar trade wall around the U.S. economy. Translation: imported goods will get pricier, and small businesses might feel the squeeze. If you're importing products or parts, expect higher costs—and possibly tough choices like raising prices or cutting back elsewhere (like on ads).

Reels Goes Solo?
Instagram is reportedly exploring a standalone Reels app to keep pace with TikTok’s Gen Z grip. The move could make short-form video content even more central to Meta’s playbook. Why it matters: If Reels gets its own spotlight, that might mean new ad formats, new algorithms, and more eyeballs on fast, fun content. Stay flexible—social platforms love to reinvent themselves.

Nerd Tip of the Week 🎯
Brand Reputation: Listen First, Respond Fast
Your brand’s reputation is basically your business’s report card. People are talking—your job is to hear them out and respond thoughtfully. That starts with knowing when your name pops up online.
One simple way to keep tabs? Set up Google Alerts for your business name, product names, or relevant keywords. That way, you’ll get notified when someone mentions you on the web. You should also check your social media accounts regularly to see what customers are saying—whether that’s a glowing review or a not-so-great complaint.
When someone leaves a positive comment, take a moment to say thanks. If it’s a complaint, respond calmly and helpfully. Even a quick “We hear you—let’s fix it” can go a long way.
Think of it like this: If someone was talking about you at a school dance, wouldn’t you want to know what they said—and either clear things up or say thanks? The same logic applies to your brand.
By showing up in these moments, you prove that you’re listening, that you care, and that your customers matter. That’s how reputations are built—or rebuilt.

Real-World Example 🔎
🍻 Bud Light’s Reputation Blunder (2023)
|
|
Remember when Bud Light’s influencer campaign backfired in 2023? The brand faced backlash, then responded unclearly, upsetting pretty much everyone. Sales dropped more than 20%, and it lost its top beer spot in America.
What went wrong? No clear plan. No strong response. And a confusing walk-back of their original message.
The takeaway: Whether you're Nike or a neighborhood bakery, stay consistent with your brand values. If you're bold enough to take a stand, be ready to stand by it—and speak up with confidence.

Marketing Mythbuster 🧠
“All publicity is good publicity.”
Let’s be real: not all buzz is good buzz. A PR scandal or viral bad review can do serious damage. Sure, it gets attention—but not the kind you want.
Reality: Smart marketers aim for quality over chaos. You’re better off with a small wave of good buzz than a tidal wave of regret.

Just for Fun 😂
"Why did the marketer get off the trampoline?"
He was worried about his bounce rate.
😄 Metrics jokes = always in good form. Now go lower that bounce rate—both digital and physical.
